DMAW Lawyers hosts NAIDOC Week Beyond Session with Michelle Cioffi

In celebration of NAIDOC Week, DMAW Lawyers recently welcomed Michelle Cioffi, Principal Legal Officer at the Cape York Land Council, to present a special Beyond Session to our team.

Michelle provided an overview of the Cape York United #1 Claim, one Australia's most significant contemporary Native Title matters, outlining the legal process, the collaborative approach adopted throughout the claim and the practical outcomes achieved.

The session provided valuable insights into the complexities of Native Title law and the importance of working closely with Traditional Owners and other stakeholders to achieve meaningful outcomes.

Held during NAIDOC Week, this session was also a timely opportunity for staff to learn more about Native Title and engage with issues of significance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It provides an opportunity for all Australians to learn more about First Nations cultures and histories, recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and reflect on the ongoing journey towards reconciliation.

This year marks 50 years of NAIDOC Week, celebrating five decades of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture and achievement. The 2026 theme, "50 Years: Strong, Proud, Next," recognises the legacy of those who have come before while looking to the future and the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders.
